April 1999 We look at Sudan, one of the most notorious slave states. Here slavery is widely used as a weapon of war by the Muslim north against the Christian and animist south. In the ruins of a burnt-out village, lie the heaped, rotting bodies of slaves who tried to escape the northern raiders who stalk the southern Sudan. Slaving here has killed thousands of people; the survivors have horrific tales to tell. Matihiane and her children were captured a year ago. They were marched for 10 days, given food mixed with sand and urine, beaten if they slowed and sent to work. On arriving with her new master, he forcibly circumcised her. Such inhumanity has led many to come to the aid of the southern Sudanese. Baroness Cox, is the most controversial. Sitting with the slavers in the shade of a tree, she exchanges greetings and begins to barter for the human booty. Today, $325,000 changes hands for the freedom of 325 slaves. While her solution offers immediate salvation for the few, it could also be responsible for the rising number of slave raids. The UN and other humanitarian agencies will not work with her. She though is adamant; "It would go on whether we were here or not...it isn't going to change the war." Even for the slaves she frees though, liberty comes with no guarantees. The only thing that can buy their peace of mind is an end to the war.

ha ha ha, as everybody here know (i hope so), the west cosidered Government of Sudan as enemy, so what do u expect, LIES, nad more LIES. you need proves, O.K. now SPLA, the repels joined Government of Sudan sfter peace, nobody now tlking about slaves, why didn't free just one slave. where are those slaves gone. it was war and the west joined efford with repels to make this kind of videos how pathetic this old lady

what an idiot old woman this baroness,paying that slaves is not a solution,she encourage the slave trading instead... why she dont manage to build some factories or farms for this people to have where to work and produce something...buying this people she encourage that "business"...

Not THE SLAVES! I said the slavers. SLAV-E-R-S. I don't know how anyone could've misunderstood my comment, but you did. So I'll spell it out. The persons responsible for placing anyone into a position of enslavement need to be held accountable for their actions. Slavery is an abuse of human rights. The traders should be brought into court and tried for the abuse of human rights. It needs to be stopped quickly and punished harshly.

this act of bying back people, is a problem, I think they make the problem of slave trading worse. Black markets happen because there is a market for it, if no one would buy them, no one would take them from thier homes. they may be buying back the freedom of a few but their acts encourage the capture and enslavement of many more in the future. this solves nothing. . . I cry for an answer. . .
